Statue of Chiang Kai-Shek
蔣公銅像
錄像 video/ 2024
Chiang Kai-shek's bronze statues were once ubiquitous throughout Taiwan, and to this day, they are considered relics of the authoritarian era. With the change of ruling parties, the removal of these statues has become part of transitional justice. The Chiang Kai-shek statues that once stood in Taiwan have been dismantled in various public and private sectors and are now concentrated in the Cihu Memorial Sculpture Park in Taoyuan. Similarly, the everyday Chiang Kai-shek coins remain as a remnant of daily life.
I sculpted a Chiang Kai-shek statue in the Cihu Memorial Sculpture Park in Taoyuan using ten-dollar coins. According to the "Precautions for Constructing Presidential Bronze Statuees" published in 1975, the statue's height must not be less than 170 centimeters. A ten-dollar coin is 1.63 millimeters thick; to stack ten-dollar coins into a 170-centimeter-high bronze pillar, at least 1043 ten-dollar coins would be needed.
